Separate DB for Source, Staging and Target

Hi,

I think it is a better to have separate databases for Source, Staging and Target. Everything in one database is kind of messy particularly in a multi user environment. But client thinks having three separate databases are too much and asking for best practice document on this. Is there a best practice document which highlights this? How can i justify this? Any suggestions?
